Alexander County mom jailed in 4-day-old infant’s death
An Alexander County woman was arrested in connection with the death of her 4-day-old infant.
Aishia Marie Pacheco, 22, was charged with second-degree murder and jailed on $1 million bail, the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff Chris Bowman said the baby was suffocated because he was crying, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
About 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, Alexander County 911 received a call of an unresponsive infant in a home in the Wittenburg community, in the southwestern end of the county. CPR instructions were given over the phone to the mother, sheriff’s investigators said in a news release.
Sheriff’s investigators and first responders found the infant unresponsive, and EMS paramedics declared the baby dead.
The infant was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for an autopsy.
Pacheco’s first court appearance is scheduled for June 6 in Alexander County District Court.
