Detectives have arrested a man in connection with a 20-year-old sexual assault in west Charlotte.
Kirk Deanglo Evans, 50, is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was in Mecklenburg jail on Tuesday under a $200,000 bond.
Investigators say the assault happened on Feb. 15, 1994. A woman walking along Beatties Ford Road was approached by a man who forced her into a vehicle.
The woman was driven to an area along Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, where she was sexually assaulted and robbed. The assailant released the woman, and she called police, but they were unable to identify a suspect.
Last year, detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit re-examined evidence from the case and submitted DNA to a lab. The sample matched Evans’ DNA, police said. Evans was arrested on Grass Hollow Road on Tuesday morning.
Evans has been to prison for sex offenses twice before, according to court records. In 1999, he was convicted of second-degree rape and spent more than five years in prison. In 1988, Evans was convicted of first-degree rape of a child and spent three years in prison.
Since 2008, the cold case sexual assault unit has cleared 145 cases, including 58 by arrest.
