Former UNC basketball player P.J. Hairston was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Wrightsville Beach for outstanding warrants.
Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Dan House said Hairston, 24, of Greensboro, was arrested for outstanding warrants in Orange County for “harassing communications.”
Kevin Poteat was driving a car registered to Hairston and was stopped by officers following a disturbance at a Wings Beachwear store in Wrightsville Beach. Poteat was arrested for driving while intoxicated, House said.
After running the tag on the car and finding out Hairston was the owner and had an outstanding warrant, the officers asked Poteat for Hairston’s location and Hairston was later arrested on the beach.
Never miss a local story.
Hairston was taken to the New Hanover County Detention Facility where a $1,000 unsecured bond was set, according to Lt. Jerry Brewer of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Brewer said at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday that Hairston should be out on bond “in about 30 minutes.”
Hairston was a guard for UNC from 2011-13. During the 2012-13 season, he averaged 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds. The team went 25-11 that year.
Miami chose Hairston as the 26th pick in the first round of the 2014 NBA draft. Hairston later played for the Charlotte Hornets in 2014-16 and later played for the Memphis Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors and now is part of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in Texas, an NBA D-League team.
Hairston was cited in 2015 for speeding, driving with a revoked license, having expired tags and driving left of center.
In 2013, he was arrested following a traffic stop in Durham for misdemeanor marijuana possession (a charge that was later dropped), a handgun found near the car he was in and driving without a license.
The NCAA later revoked his eligibility, related to him using a rental car that was an impermissible benefit. Along the way, he was charged with speeding between Greensboro and Charlotte in another high-profile incident. He was suspended from the UNC basketball team in 2013 after his arrest.
