The Hough Huskies made two big plays in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime, then made two more in overtime to earn a dramatic come-from-behind 24-23 victory at Ardrey Kell Friday night.
It was a defensive struggle for most of the game, as Ardrey Kell led 7-3 after three quarters. Trailing 10-3 in the fourth, Hough tied the game when Jarrett Nagy scored on a 63-yard run for a score. But Ardrey Kell drove 80 yards in seven plays, all runs, and took a 17-10 lead on Merrick Haston’s 14-yard run with 5 minutes, 50 seconds left.
After a stop, Ardrey Kell had possession and faced fourth-and-1 at its 30 with just under two minutes left. The Knights scrapped the punt and went for it, but Hough stopped Haston short of the line. Three plays later, Andrew Dziuk scored with 1:08 left from 5 yards out to force overtime at 17-17.
In overtime, Hough quarterback Jackson Gibbs threw a touchdown pass to Damon Early to give the Huskies a 24-17 lead. Ardrey Kell answered as Haston scored on the first play with a 10-yard run. But the extra point was blocked by Jacob Edmond to give Hough the victory.
Quote: “We’re learning and getting better each day,” Hough coach Miles Aldridge said. “We’re so young, but the kids are starting to understand the level of play it takes to compete.”
Records: Hough is 3-1. Ardrey Kell is 2-2.
Worth mentioning: Ardrey Kell’s Haston had 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Hough’s Nagy ran for 140 and a score. ... Ardrey Kell was whistled for six penalties, Hough for five, combining for just 65 yards.
What's Next: Hough will host Butler on Friday. Ardrey Kell has a bye and will host West Mecklenburg in two weeks. .
