The Providence Day girls’ 4x400-meter relay team won gold at the prestigious Penn Relays on April 23 at the University of Pennsylvania.

The team of Emma Brown, Gracie Whelan, Courtney Joyner and Anna Cockrell won the High School Girls’ Prep Division with a time of 3 minutes, 59.19 seconds, a school record.

The time was nearly four seconds faster than the second-place team from New York, and less than a second slower than the event record of 3:58.4, set in 2014 by Springside, Pa.

Cockrell’s 400 split time of 57.63 seconds was the second-fastest in the race.

Cockrell also finished third in the girls’ 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.45, less than one second slower than the winning time of 1:00.69 (Brooklynn Broadwater, Springside High, Pa.).

The Penn Relays is the oldest track and field relay meet in the country, and this year there were more than 22,000 entries from high schools and colleges.
