Marvin Ridge wins NC 3A boys state track meet

Marvin Ridge’s boys took the N.C. 3A state track championship title Friday at N.C. A&T, edging Union County rival Sun Valley.

Marvin Ridge had 60 total points. Sun Valley – which got a stellar performance from meet MVP Kadarius Lotharp – finished with 44 points. Southern Guilford (61 points) won the girls team title, with Marvin Ridge (39) finishing second.

Lotharp won the 100-meters at 10.35 seconds. He won the 200 at 21.54. He joined Albert Funderburke, Isaiah Hicklin and Fabrice Funderburk to win the 400-meter relay and he also ran a leg on Sun Valley’s state championship winning 800-meter relay team, made up of the same teammates.

Area boys winners included:

▪ Piedmont’s Ty Jaye Robbins-Lockhart won the 400-meter.

▪ Weddington’s Matthew Connor won the 3,200.

▪ East Gaston’s Corey Thompson won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

▪ Marvin Ridge’s Christopher Garrick won the high jump. Teammate Julian Gaines won the long jump.

▪ Ashbrook’s Tyson Fortenberry won the shot put and the discus.

Area girls winners included:

▪ Marvin Ridge’s girls 3,200-meter relay (Alexa King, Melanie Hussey, Nicole Renwick and Jennae Jacob). Marvin Ridge pole vaulter Shaye Stegall won.

▪ South Iredell’s Julia Scoles won the high jump.

▪ Weddington’s Hannah Stokes won in the shot put.
