Charlotte Christian baseball offense: eight runs in first inning of 11-1 win over High Point Wesleyan in NCISAA 3A state championship series Game 1.

Myers Park girls soccer: Ranked No. 3 in the N.C. 4A coaches poll, the Mustangs (15-2-2) were upset 3-2 by unranked East Forsyth (16-5) in Charlotte in the second round. Abby Givens and Blair Anderes scored for Myers Park. East got goals from Morgan Everett, Megan Walsh and Debbie Killian.

Ardrey Kell girls soccer: Knights, ranked No. 13 in the 4A coaches poll, upset No. 4 Hough 3-2 Friday. Hough will not reach a Mecklenburg County record fourth straight girls N.C. 4A state final. Huskies had won two of the past three N.C. 4A state titles under coach David Smith.

Malia Ellington, Community School of Davidson girls track: Named MVP for second straight year of the N.C. 1A state track meet. Ellington won three individual events and ran on a winning relay team Friday at N.C. A&T.

Charlotte Country Day girls lacrosse: Will try to win third straight state championship in Saturday’s 1 p.m. home final against Durham Academy.

Friday’s Top Performers

Tate Pennington, Butler baseball: Three-run homer in the first in a 7-3 win over Myers Park in the second round of the N.C. 4A playoffs.

Jared Norman, Butler baseball: Solo home run in the first inning of Butler’s win over Myers Park. He also had a two-run double in the second.

Mackenzie Pennell, Alexander Central softball: Catcher helped spark an 11-1 win over Providence in a second round N.C. 4A playoff. Pennell was 2-of-3 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Pitcher Kiana Millsaps improved to 28-0.

Community School’s Ellington wins MVP at 1A state track

Community School of Davidson senior Malia Ellington won three events at Friday’s N.C. 1A state track meet at N.C. A&T. She led her team to a second place finish and won meet MVP for the second straight year.

Ellington won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She won the 800 in 2:12.26, ahead of teammate Megan Perkins (2:21.71). She won the 1,600 in 5:04.85. Robbinsville’s Shawnda Martin was second in 5:19.65. Ellington won the 3,200 in 11:28.59. Martin was second in 11:43.71.

Finally, Ellington anchored her team’s 1,600-meter relay team, which set a new meet record in 4:04.26. Her relay teammates were Rebecca Fesperman, Clarke Alexander and Megan Perkins. Winston-Salem Prep won the girls championship. It finished with 64 points, eight better than Community School.

North Stokes won its second straight boys title.

Area winners included Queens Grant’s Avianna Hopkins (girls discus) and Albemarle’s Terrace Ellis (400).

▪ The N.C. 2A track meet is Saturday at N.C. A&T. Monroe won the 2014 state title after winning 1A championships in 2012 and 1013.

Baseball: Christian one game away from state title

Charlotte Christian grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 NCISAA 3A state baseball championship series with an 11-1 win over High Point Wesleyan at Covenant Day School in Matthews. Game 2, at Covenant Day, starts Saturday at noon.

Christian (27-4) handed Wesleyan just its second loss in 21 games. Ross Kemp got the win for Christian, which got four hits and three RBIs from Bailey Lewis and Miles Gary. Patrick Bailey and Beau Myers were each 2-for-3 for Wesleyan.

Girls Soccer: Charlotte Latin, Providence Day to meet in NCISAA 3A state final Saturday

Charlotte Latin and Providence Day advanced to Saturday’s 1 p.m. NCISAA 3A state championship game at Durham Academy.

Charlotte Latin (16-0-2) beat High Point Wesleyan 2-0 behind goals from Abbie McCarter and Carrie Mittl. Claudia McCabe got the shutout.

Providence Day arrived after a 2-1 double-overtime win against Cary Academy. Carson Jones and Cameron Jones scored for the Chargers. Providence Day will try to win its third straight state championship Saturday. It beat Cary Academy 3-0 in the 2014 final and beat Greensboro Day 2-1 in 2013.

Marvin Ridge, Pine Lake Prep go for N.C. dual team tennis state titles Saturday

Pine Lake Prep of Mooresville and Marvin Ridge of Union County will try to win N.C. dual team tennis titles Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Marvin Ridge (17-0) will play Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (22-4) at 12:30 p.m. in the 3A final. Marvin Ridge players occupied three of the four slots in the state semifinals last weekend in singles and doubles, and the state championship in doubles featured two Mavericks teams in the final and was won by Hayden Wohlfarth and Woody Watson. Matt Galush of Cardinal Gibbons won the 3-A singles title and beat George Lovitt of Marvin Ridge for the championship.

Gibbons has won the past four state titles.

Also at 12:30 p.m., Pine Lake Prep (12-1) plays Raleigh Charter (10-0) for the 1A final. Pine Lake Prep is in the finals for the first time, led by 1A singles champ Max Vicario. Raleigh Charter is in the finals for the third time in the last four years but still seeking its initial state dual team title, sports this year’s state doubles champs, Harrison Tseng and Joseph Fisher.

In 2A, Brevard (16-0) plays Carrboro (14-2) for the second year in a row. In 4A, Greensboro Page plays Raleigh Wakefield at 9:30 a.m.

Cannon School wins NCISAA golf title

Cannon School won the NCISAA 3A golf title by 11 shots over Christ School Tuesday in Greensboro.

Christ School’s Jonathan Rector won the individual state title after a playoff with Cannon’s Will Gordon. Cannon’s Michael Sanders was third. Along with Gordon and Sanders, Country Day’s Drew Bernard, Charlotte Christian’s Aaron Walker and Cannon’s Noah Edmondson and Davis Kiger were named to the All-State team.

Westchester Country Day won the 2A title and Burlington School won in 1A.
