Providence Day’s boys, girls dominate state track meet

Providence Day’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams won N.C. Independent Schools 3A championships Saturday at Concord’s Cannon School.

The Chargers girls won easily, totaling 156 points. Cary Academy was second with 98.5 points. Raleigh Ravenscroft (65) was third, followed by Cannon (56) and Charlotte Latin (52). The Chargers boys had a tougher time, winning with 106 points, just ahead of Charlotte Latin (102.5). Charlotte Christian (75.5) was third.

Anna Cockrell won three girls events: the 100 hurdles, 100-meters and the 300 hurdles. She also ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay team with Sara Cotsakis, Grace Whelan and Courtney Joyner.

For the Chargers boys, Nick Linder won the 1,600, the 3,200 and ran with William Glenn, Elias Eskind and Millan Henegar on the winning 3,200-meter relay team. All-conference basketball star Chaz Raye won the long jump and the triple jump.

Other Chargers girls winners included Gracie Whelan (400 meters) and Sarah Richmond (1,600);

▪ Area girls winners included: Cannon’s Jodie Jackson (discus); Covenant Day 1,600-meter relay team (Megan Embry, Hannah Joye, Caroline Fletcher, Erica VanDusen); Charlotte Latin’s 400-meter relay team (Kate Mace, Lily Beck, Sierra Scott, Sydney Scott)

▪ Area boys winners included: Tre Seegars, Charlotte Country Day (shot put); Jackson Widener, Charlotte Country Day (pole vault); Josh Broadway, Charlotte Christian (110 hurdles); Kanyon Tuttle, Charlotte Latin (100-meters); Thomas Nations, Charlotte Christian (300 hurdles); Charlotte Latin’s 800-meter relay team (DeMarkes Stradford, Adam Bear, Peter McDowell, Kanyon Tuttle); Charlotte Christian’s 400-meter relay team (Josh Broadway, Jaylon McClinton, Thomas Nations, Justus Woods)
