Providence, South Meck advance in NCHSAA soccer playoffs
Providence and South Mecklenburg have a date in the N.C. 4A state semifinals.
Providence shut out Myers Park 2-0 in the N.C. 4A quarterfinals. It was the team’s second straight shutout. In four playoff wins now the Panthers have allowed just two goals. Providence will try to qualify for its first state final appearance since 2000.
South Meck beat Hough 1-0 in overtime to remain unbeaten. Ethan DeSilva got the game-winning goal with one minute left in overtime.
Nationally ranked South Mecklenburg will host Providence Tuesday in the N.C. 4A Western regional championship game. South Meck will go for its first state championship appearance since 1985. The semifinal match starts at 7 pm.
▪ In 1A, Community School of Davidson advanced to the N.C. semifinals with a 3-1 win over Gastonia’s Highland Tech Saturday. Francisco Prado had two goals and Jason Coggins had the third. Noah McLeod had two saves.
▪ In 3A, Asheville beat Cox Mill in 5-4 on penalty kicks.
