Lauren Gish, Fleming Landau share Observer’s girls’ tennis player of the year

Lake Norman’s Lauren Gish and Charlotte Latin’s Fleming Landau share the 2015 Charlotte Observer girls’ tennis player of the year honor.

Gish, a junior, went 15-1 and was 4A runner-up.

Landau, a sophomore, went 19-1 overall (singles), including 19-0 in NCISAA singles play, as the two-time all-state performer led her team (18-4) to a NCISAA 3A runner-up finish (to Country Day).

Charlotte Country Day’s Calvin Davis and Lake Norman Charter’s Jennifer Gomez share Observer coach of the year honors after leading their teams to unbeaten records in state championship seasons.

Country Day went 20-0 on its way to a third straight NCISAA 3A state championship. Lake Norman Charter went 18-0 on its way to a second straight NCHSAA 2A state title.

First Team

Singles

Fleming Landau, Charlotte Latin, So.: Already a two-time all-state pick, went 19-1 in singles play, led Latin to 4A state runner-up finish.

Lauren Gish, Lake Norman, Jr.: 4A state singles runner-up was 15-1 on the season, also winning the North Piedmont conference, 4A West Regional singles titles.

Maddie Weber, Myers Park, Jr.: 4A state singles semifinalist was Southwestern 4A conference player of the year, 4A West Regional runner-up, 18-6 in singles play.

Rachel Marthinsen, Charlotte Catholic, Jr.: Cougars’ No. 1 went 16-5 in singles play beating some of the state’s best, also advanced to second round of 4A state doubles tournament.

Avery Hunter, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: Another all-state season as she went 28-5 overall (13-2 singles, 15-3 doubles) to lead Bucs to third straight state title.

Sarah Jiang, Cox Mill, Sr.: 3A state singles runner-up for the third year in a row, after going unbeaten in the regular season claiming South Piedmont conference, 3A Midwest Regional singles titles.

Marisa Deininger, Community School of Davidson, Jr.: 1A state singles champion went 26-2 overall (16-1 singles, 10-1 doubles) after winning 1A doubles title last year.

Lauren Bush, Lake Norman Charter, So.: After going 24-0 overall in the regular season, Bush also finished as 2A singles state runner-up, and 2A West Regional runner-up (singles).

Doubles

Hannah Archer, Lake Norman Charter, Sr./Olivia Archer, Lake Norman Charter, So.: Archer sisters won their second straight 2A state doubles titles going 19-0 on the season.

Catie Nelson, So./Lizzy Fiepke, So., Charlotte Catholic: SoMeck8 conference, 4A West Regional doubles champs, state qualifiers, 16-5 together.

Ella Imhof, Fr./Rachel Zubrinsky, Jr., Marvin Ridge: Mavericks duo was 8-1 as they also excelled in singles play, led Marvin Ridge to a 3A team title.

Gabby Soden, Sr./Katie Soden, Jr., Myers Park: Mustangs sister duo went 14-4 together with 4A West Regional doubles runner-up finish, helping team to 4A state runner-up finish.

Rachel Carroll, Jr./Kylie Maher, Sr., Charlotte Country Day: Bucs duo went 15-1 this season, big part of Bucs’ dominant run to third straight state title.
