Two Cabarrus County high school basketball standouts have been invited to the adidas Nations camp for some of the nation’s top players in the classes of 2018 and 2019.
Concord High’s Rechon “Leaky” Black and Cannon School’s Jairus Hamilton will attend the camp in Miami Friday through Sunday. The pair, along with 22 other invitees, will be exposed to what adidas calls “an intimate development experience for an exclusive group of the country’s top ranked players.” Black and Hamilton are teammates on the Team Loaded NC 17U travel team this summer, playing up an age group against rising high school seniors.
In Miami, the players will get to play against their peers, as selected by the shoe company, in a setting that is not open to the public. Former NBA coaches will help run the camp and coach during live game sessions. Previous coaches include Lionel Hollins, Mike Brown, Mike Dunleavy and Mike Malone.
Black, a UNC recruit, was named to the Associated Press all-state team and the MaxPreps All-American sophomore national team this season. He’s considered the No. 1 ranked recruit in North Carolina for the class of 2018. He averaged 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals last season. He committed to the Tar Heels in January. ESPN ranks Black No. 19 nationally in the 2018 class.
Hamilton was a first-team N.C. Independent Schools all-state pick and was runner-up to two-time Charlotte Observer player of the year Grant Williams of Providence Day as player of the year in Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association. Hamilton averaged 22.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists last season. Hamilton, who got an offer from Texas A&M Tuesday, also has offers from Hampton, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Duke and Kansas are also recruiting him. 247Sports ranks Hamilton No. 37 nationally, the highest of any N.C. recruit in the class of 2018. It ranks Black No. 58.
