Texans select Wake Forest’s Kevin Johnson at No. 16
Kevin Johnson, a cornerback from Wake Forest, was selected No. 16 overall in the 2015 NFL draft Thursday in Chicago.
Ht.: 6-1. Wt.: 188.
What he offers: Maybe the cleanest footwork in the draft among defensive backs, according to some coaches.
Worth mentioning: Johnson’s selection follows the 2014 decision to make linebacker Jadeveon Clowney of Rock Hill the No. 1 overall pick. Johnson is set to eventually replace veteran Johnathan Joseph, 31, in the secondary. ... Johnson ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds at the NFL scouting combine in February in Indianapolis. The Clarksville, Md., native recorded a 41.5-inch vertical and 130-inch broad jump. ... Johnson totaled 44 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery last season for the Deacons. He was projected as a late first round or early second round selection on some mock drafts.
Bet you didn’t know: Johnson was a five-year senior at Wake Forest, starting 41 games while redshirting his sophomore year because he was academically ineligible.
What they’re saying: “He can play inside and outside, press or off coverage. All the defensive back coaches I talk to talk about his feet … so quick. The only concern is his frame and durability. But this is a really good football player.” – NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.
