Panthers resign receiver Damiere Byrd to practice squad

The Panthers re-signed former South Carolina wide receiver Damiere Byrd to the practice squad Tuesday, a few days after cutting him.

The team released linebacker Brian Blechen to make room for Byrd on the practice squad.

The move looks to be insurance in the event the Panthers have to bring wideout Brenton Bersin up from the practice squad to fill in for veteran Jerricho Cotchery, who sustained a high ankle sprain against Houston.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he hopes Cotchery can play this week against New Orleans.

Byrd was with the Panthers during training camp, but the former Gamecocks' track star was among the final cuts.
