Corporate Finance Institute Review: Courses, Certs & Who It’s For

Published October 20, 2026

“I want to work in finance” sounds specific until you start looking at the jobs.

You could end up building budgets, reviewing loans, valuing companies, tracking markets, or working with data.

Each path needs different skills, and the wrong training can send you in a completely different direction.

CFI tries to cover those paths through 250+ courses and seven certifications. But can one platform really prepare you for that many roles?

For this Corporate Finance Institute review, I tested CFI from inside the platform, including its lessons, templates, assessments, and study tools, to find out. Here is what you should know.

Is CFI a Good Match for You?

  • You learn by doing: CFI gives you spreadsheets, cases, and quizzes instead of making you watch videos the whole time.
  • You need a clear plan: Choose a certification path. The full course library can feel random without one.
  • You want live classes: CFI is probably not for you. Everything is online and self-paced.
  • You are studying for one major exam: An exam prep provider may make more sense than a large finance library.
  • You want someone to check your work: That is only included with Full-Immersion, which adds expert questions and model feedback.

Corporate Finance Institute: My First Impression

CFI is basically an all-in-one training platform for people who want practical finance skills. My first impression was that there is a lot inside, but the platform does a good job of helping you narrow it down.

Before I even reached the dashboard, I took a quick personalization survey that lasted about two minutes. It asked about my finance experience and what I wanted to learn, then gave me a few courses to start with.

CFI personalization survey start screen before reaching the member dashboard
The survey started by asking where I was in my finance career, with choices ranging from student to experienced professional.

After clicking around for a bit, I realized I could take one course for a specific topic, work through a specialization with related skills, or follow a full certification path. The membership includes 15 specializations and seven certifications: FMVA®, FPAP™, CBCA®, CMSA®, BIDA®, FPWMP®, and FTIP®.

This setup gives you plenty of choices if you already know your goal. If you do not, expect to open a few program pages before everything makes sense.

A Closer Look at the CFI Platform

Student Dashboard and Course Layout

My dashboard was packed because the membership gave me access to so many courses, certifications, and extra resources.

Inside my dashboard, I could see my certification paths, active courses, saved notes, templates, and other membership resources.

The sidebar included my active courses, saved notes, certificates, career paths, course catalog, templates, assessments, podcasts, webinars, and support tools. It took me a minute to figure out where I needed to go, especially when choosing between the Course Catalog and Get Certified sections. Once I learned the layout, everything became much easier.

Video Lesson Quality

Inside the Overview of Financial Statements lesson, I could watch the video while following the full course outline on the left.

The lessons were short and used clean slides, diagrams, and examples. Honestly, the videos were not always the most engaging.

They did load fast, though, and the interactive quizzes helped pull my attention back in. The lessons were easy to fit into a quick study session, but some topics ended before I felt fully comfortable with the material.

Skills Assessments

I had separate skills assessments for accounting, Excel, modeling, Power BI, Tableau, valuation, and more. I liked that I could choose exactly what I wanted to test instead of taking one huge assessment.

My Data & Analysis Basics results showed my 45-point score, percentile ranking, and two recommended courses.

Based on my results, CFI recommended two courses I could take next. I could then retake the assessment to see if my score improved. The only thing missing was a clear breakdown of what I got wrong. I knew I did well, but not what I personally needed to work on.

Student Help and Feedback

Full-Immersion included two ways to get personal help. I could ask up to five finance questions each week or submit a course model for feedback.

The form let me upload a spreadsheet or screenshot and explain exactly where I was stuck. It even asked for cell references and video timestamps, so I did not have to describe one random formula from memory.

The Ask an Expert form let me upload a model or screenshot and include exact cell references or video timestamps with my question.

The Webinar Library

CFI also had recorded webinars about Excel, financial modeling, AI, interviews, accounting, and finance careers. They went deeper than the regular lessons, but they could get pretty long, with some lasting over an hour.

CFI recorded webinar library listing finance topics and session lengths
For longer lessons, I could browse recorded webinars by finance topic and see how long each session would take.

If I did not have time to watch one right away, I could use the bookmark button beside it to save it for later. I liked that I could build a small list instead of trying to remember which ones I wanted to come back to.

Corporate Finance Institute Compared to Other Providers

AnalystPrep vs. CFI

AnalystPrep is built around exam practice. Videos and notes teach the material, while custom quizzes, mock exams, and score tracking show what still needs work. Everything points toward passing the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®), FRM, ESG, or actuarial exams.

Inside CFI, the work comes first. I could open a model, change the inputs, test a skill, or follow one of seven certification paths. Lessons cover Excel, modeling, credit, data, and other skills used in finance jobs.

Quick Take:

  • AnalystPrep is the one to try when passing a professional exam is the main goal.
  • CFI makes sense when you care more about building skills you can use at work.

Kaplan Schweser vs. CFI

Kaplan Schweser gives students a set route to exam day. Packages may include printed notes, a QBank, mock exams, review workshops, and live or recorded classes. The study plan is already mapped out.

CFI opens the whole library at once. The dashboard holds 250+ courses, and nothing is tied to a class date. I could jump from Excel to modeling or start a certification whenever I had time.

Which One Makes More Sense?

  • Kaplan Schweser is a solid pick if you like knowing exactly what to study next.
  • CFI gives you more freedom to choose your own learning path.

Fitch Learning vs. CFI

Fitch Learning keeps formal training on the table. Its 100+ courses and qualifications may include classroom, virtual, or online study, along with instructor help and exam practice. Some options give students an actual date and place to show up.

CFI runs online and on demand. Full-Immersion members can send five questions each week, and one model for feedback, but the courses have no meetings or start dates. Studying happens whenever you log in and is flexible.

Who Fits Your Needs?

  • Fitch Learning is a good match if you want scheduled training and help from an instructor.
  • CFI is better if you need fully online lessons without set class times.

The ESG Institute vs. CFI

With the ESG Institute, sustainability is the main focus. Its self-paced programs cover ESG strategy, reporting, sustainable finance, carbon markets, climate law, and related topics.

CFI connects ESG to finance. Its two ESG specializations cover investing, valuation, risk, strategy, and compliance. The same membership also includes accounting, modeling, credit, and data.

Bottom Line:

  • The ESG Institute makes the most sense if you want to focus only on ESG and sustainability.
  • CFI could work best if you need ESG included with other finance topics.

My Final Take on Corporate Finance Institute

My honest opinion?

CFI is worth choosing if you want hands-on finance skills, useful templates, and several career paths in one membership. I liked that I could start with one course and work my way into a specialization or full certification without switching platforms. There is a lot to explore, but once I picked a goal, CFI gave me plenty of ways to learn, practice, and build skills I could actually use.

If you lean more toward question-heavy exam prep, try AnalystPrep. If you want a clear study plan with classes and review workshops, Kaplan Schweser is another good choice.

Either way, choose smart, work hard, and go reach that goal.

FAQs

How long does a CFI certification take?

It depends on the program and how often you study. For example, CFI estimates about 100 to 120 hours for the FMVA and 70 to 90 hours for the CMSA. Both are self-paced.

Is CFI the same as the CFA®?

No. CFI is an online training company with career-based certifications such as the FMVA. The CFA® is a separate professional designation offered by CFA Institute and takes several years to earn.

Are CFI exams taken online?

Yes. Final exams are online, timed, and do not need to be scheduled ahead of time. Most use multiple-choice questions and require a score of at least 70%.

What happens if I fail a CFI exam?

You can try again after waiting 30 days. Retakes do not cost extra, but your membership must still be active. There is no limit on how many times you can retake a failed exam.

Do CFI certificates expire?

No. Once earned, a CFI certificate is yours for life. You can download it, print it, or add it to LinkedIn, but you need an active membership to return to the paid lessons.

Can I try CFI for free?

You can preview parts of the paid courses before joining. Careers in Finance is currently the only full course available for free.

Can I cancel my CFI membership?

Yes, but the plans renew each year automatically unless you turn off renewal. Canceling stops the next charge, but it normally does not give you a refund. Access stays open until the current billing period ends.
