Tex-Mex favorite Superica opens soon in Charlotte’s Strawberry Hill
South Charlotte fans of the popular Tex-Mex eatery Superica (which is pronounced Super - ica, to settle the debate) have a reason to celebrate. Mark your calendar: the South End favorite is expanding into the SouthPark area and has announced its opening date of Nov. 16.
ICYMI: If you don’t want to wait, the restaurant will be hosting a taco pop-up this Sunday, Nov. 8. Between 9 and 11 a.m., there will be complimentary breakfast tacos - migas style - available with chorizo, bacon or veggies (one per person).
The Austin-style restaurant first brought its wood-grilled flavors to Charlotte in 2018. Fast forward to 2020, the company stated it decided to expand further into the Queen City, selecting Strawberry Hill as location No. 2, which Charlotte Business Journal first reported.
Chef-owner Ford Fry curated Superica’s menu by combining his Houston upbringing with evolved specialties. Menu items will include wood-fired steaks, crispy whole snapper and shrimp tacos served with fresh flour and corn tortillas.
And yes, there will be signature margaritas.
“I would say the menu is going to be about 95 percent the same as South End,” Fry said. “We are working on some new stuff that will probably show up at opening and could possibly roll to the South End location, as well.”
The new location will also offer arcade games and a spacious outdoor patio with a seasonal Airstream-style satellite bar with frozen margaritas, cocktails and other beverages.
The decor will reflect old Texas dance halls and hill country cafes, mixing in vintage elements and unique artwork, such as hand-forged chandeliers, ’70s-inspired theatre pendants and other one-of-a-kind pieces from Austin, Texas, which Superica’s designer thoughtfully selects. You can expect the same “come as you are” ambiance and comfortable familiarity as Superica’s South End sister.
“Our designer, Smith Hanes, is really going for that 1970s West Texas feel with this one,” Fry said. “There will be some similarities to the South End location, but it is not really in his nature to do the same thing. A lot of that comes into play towards the end of the project within the details, which are normally one-of-a-kind.”
Fry told CharlotteFive that he is looking forward to having a location in the family-driven area of SouthPark. He is curious to see if the new patio will be as popular as Harris Teeter’s second-floor bar on Providence Road, but ramped up with tequila instead of wine.
