‘This isn’t goodbye’: A popular retailer in Birkdale Village is closing — and opening a new shop
A popular women’s retail store is closing in Huntersville’s Birkdale Village after a year — and opening a new space in the shopping center.
Girl Tribe Co. announced on Instagram that Girl Supply, which supports and features women-owned businesses exclusively, is closing.
But the Girl Tribe team is opening a new shopping experience in Birkdale Village with Girl Tribe Kiosk with its 1972 camper van also known as “Byrdie Bus.”
“We could never have imagined how good the Huntersville Inc. Birkdale community has been to Girl Tribe and Girl Supply in the last two years of this project. We are so excited that we were able to stay in Birkdale and continue to connect with our amazing customers,” said Sarah Baucom, co-founder of Girl Tribe.
The owners told Charlotte Business Journal, who broke the news of the opening Wednesday morning, back in March the store would be closing to make room for another Girl Tribe store.
Girl Supply opened its doors in the Huntersville shopping center in 2022, as part of a redevelopment plan to bring in more smaller-format stores, including restaurants and pop-up shops like this one.
The store, hosted by Girl Tribe Co. in collaboration with Studio Cultivate and North American Retail Properties, carries women’s clothing, accessories and other goods.
Girl Tribe was founded in 2014 as a side hustle for Charlotte natives and friends Carrie Barker and Sarah Baucom. What started as a T-shirt company later grew to a bigger clothing line with several pop-ups for small, women-owned businesses and two other storefront locations in South End and SouthPark.
A handful of other new stores are expected to open at Birkdale Village this year, including Anthropologie and Lilly Pulitzer.
“We are so grateful as well to the Amazing Birkdale staff and North American properties for believing in this vision and continuing to be great partners in aiding with Girl Tribe’s expansion plans,” Baucom said.
Girl Supply will be closing on May 21, and the new kiosk will officially open its doors on May 27.
