A popular Southern restaurant in SouthPark is closing its doors after almost a decade, and a new concept run by a celebrity chef is taking its place.

Dogwood: A Southern Table & Bar, which opened in 2014, is closing Saturday, Aug. 26. The restaurant, located in Sharon Square Shopping Center, is one of several concepts owned and operated by Rare Roots Hospitality, a family-owned and family-run group of restaurants.

“We are sad to say goodbye to this homegrown concept, but we are extremely proud of Dogwood and the almost nine years we’ve shared with our guests and team there,” Jon Dressler, co-owner of Rare Roots Hospitality, said in a statement emailed to CharlotteFive. “We like to think of Dogwood as the catalyst for Rare Roots Hospitality, both as a restaurant group and family.”

Celebrity chef and restaurateur David Burke plans to take over the space and bring in The Fox & Falcon. “We’re very excited to take over for Jon Dressler, who is a legendary restaurateur in Charlotte,” David Hynes, president of David Burke Hospitality Management, told CharlotteFive on Monday afternoon. “We want to continue the legacy of great culinary arts at that venue, and we believe in the location. ... We’re going to bring David Burke’s culinary excellence to that menu.”

Charlotte Business Journal initially reported The Fox & Falcon news.

Burke owns Red Salt by David Burke and Cloud Bar in Charlotte and has recently taken over Port City Club in Cornelius. Another Lake Norman concept, G.O.A.T. Pizza, is also on the way.

The sale of Dogwood was brought on by the “natural life cycle of restaurants” with sales falling flat and another new concept opening soon, according to Unpretentious Palate, who first reported the news of Dogwood’s closing.

“Restaurants see a good run up in the first few years and then they kind of level off,” Dressler told Unpretentious Palate.

Rare Roots Hospitality, which also operates Dressler’s, The Porter House and Fin & Fino, says all team members at Dogwood are being offered a transfer to any of their other restaurants or Chapter 6, which is opening this fall.
