A beloved Charlotte sandwich shop has closed its ghost kitchen space to make a new move
Sandwich Max has closed up shop at the Southend Eats ghost kitchen and is working on reopening as early as next week in the former Paper Plane deli space in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood.
The restaurant that has been a fixture in multiple Charlotte locations since 1989 has seen a lot of change in the past year. It closed its South End location last April — where it had been located since 1993 — after its building was sold to make way for a new luxury high-rise.
From there, Sandwich Max moved into Southend Eats but didn’t plan to stay there long.
“It was intended to be a bridge for us to get into brick & mortar,” owner Sam Nicholson told CharlotteFive on Friday afternoon.
Queen City News first reported the move.
Paper Plane closed up shop at the end of September. “We created something truly beautiful at Plane,” owner Amanda Cranford said at the time. “We built community, survived a pandemic, served the best pastrami sandwich in Charlotte, created a unique dinner series that showed you can make amazing food even in a small space, and threw some badass parties.”
Now as the move is wrapping up, you’ll soon be able to get a Pressed TCB again, stuffed with Swiss cheese, turkey, ham, bacon and mayo. Or a Max’d Out, complete with ham, turkey, capicola, bologna, pepperoni and salami topped with lettuce, tomato, salt, pepper, oregano, oil and vinegar.
