Sandwich Max is closing up shop in South End as its building redevelops into apartments
Sandwich Max’s South End location — a fixture in the area since 1993 — is closing up shop Wednesday, April 12, after its building was sold. Now, a different spin on the concept is in the works.
Plans call for Chicago-based Sterling Bay to break ground on a high-rise luxury apartment tower at the site this year. A representative for the company had told The Charlotte Observer in January that talks were taking place on the future of Sandwich Max, along with neighboring Chinese restaurant Bei Jing.
Those talks ended with both Sandwich Max and Bei Jing moving out. The sandwich shop was a Charlotte favorite, and its Pressed TCB — a Turkey Cordon Bleu with Swiss, turkey, ham and bacon with mayo — was included among CharlotteFive’s list of the best sandwiches in the city.
“Thank you to South End, Dilworth, Myers Park, Elizabeth and everyone else for making our family-based business a staple in your lives since 1989. It has been both a challenge and a privilege to have a front-row seat to the growth on South Boulevard,” the business posted on Instagram.
However, something new is in the works. The post continued, “We will miss seeing everyone in the dining room, but our new local concept will offer pick-up and delivery … details coming soon.”
Owner Sam Nicholson told CharlotteFive on Friday morning that he’s partnering with ghost kitchen South End Eats on a takeout and delivery concept that will keep the Sandwich Max brand alive after a 6-8 week gap.
“Hopefully we can bridge that to brick-and-mortar again in the future,” said Nicholson, whose family once owned and operated seven locations of the sandwich shop.
