A longtime pub that’s been a staple in South End will soon be closing its doors due to new development in the area.

After nearly 25 years in the ever-evolving neighborhood, Tyber Creek Pub will be closing in its longtime building in two months, Charlotte Business Journal first reported.

Plans to close down the pub have been in the works for years, as it sits on a lot that’ll soon be under construction for a new high-rise apartment tower, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. But it won’t be a final goodbye for the beloved neighborhood spot, as it has plans to reopen in the developed space.

“It’s finally happening. We officially have a date for closing down. Fittingly, St. Patrick’s Day will be our last day,” Tyber Creek posted on Facebook on Thursday night. “We will be going out with a bang. Just before our 25th birthday, our magical run here comes to an end. Seems like we have been closing forever, so it’s bittersweet to have that final day and it be so close.

“We look forward to enjoying some big parties with you all in the next 60 days. (yea, that’s it). We have had amazing friends and family with us over the last 25 years, and we hope to see you all again before the doors close for the last time.

“Stay tuned for some major events, parties, sessions, and so much more,” the pub posted.

The new high rise

Developer Southern Land Company announced plans for the new building at the corner of Tremont Avenue and South Boulevard back in 2021, complete with 300 units and a newly extended space for Tyber Creek Pub.

Details for the pub’s new space are still being worked out, but the development could take up to three years after the pub closes, according to CBJ. “The building will go away, but the soul will continue,” co-owner Tommy Timmins told CBJ. “It’s going to be more of a rebirth than a funeral.”

A staple in South End

Over the years, South End has seen a lot of growth and development as new businesses have moved in, and longtime staples have moved out.

Tyber Creek, one of the oldest businesses in the city, is among the few that have stood the test of time, bringing in a steady crowd of local residents for decades.

“We feel extremely grateful that we have been able to be part of the ever-growing South End community,” Timmins previously told CharlotteFive. “We have watched beautiful old homes be renovated, warehouses be repurposed, and the light rail take shape and make South End into one of the best destinations to live, work and play in Charlotte. We’re excited to continue this journey for many years to come.”

Tyber Creek Pub will be marking the end of an era in its original building with one last St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and temporarily closing on March 18.
