SouthPark area restaurant and wine bar permanently closed after reopening. What we know.
Less than a year after opening, a local restaurant in the SouthPark area has closed its doors for good.
Phillip’s Bistro & Wine Bar, formerly known as Bonterra, is now permanently closed after reopening with a new name and menu in September, a spokesperson from Phillips Place confirmed to CharlotteFive on Friday, March 22.
Though Phillip’s Bistro was a new concept to Charlotte’s food scene, the original Bonterra restaurant had long been a staple in the city — with a lot of changes over the years.
Bonterra, known for its wine selection and infamous fried lobster tail, moved to Phillips Place shopping center in 2022 after nearly two decades in business at its original location, nestled in 100+-year-old restored church in Dilworth, CharlotteFive previously reported. It’ll soon be home to Leluia Hall, a new steak and surf spot.
Over the summer, the team announced plans to transform Bonterra into a new restaurant.
“From all of us at Bonterra, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you, to all the loyal customers and new friends that stopped by for drinks or a meal over the years,” the team said in a post via Instagram in an account that’s now been deactivated. “Brace yourself for a jaw-dropping transformation. We’re temporarily closing our doors for a phenomenal makeover, cooking up an epic new concept that will blow your taste buds away.”
But sometime in the last few months, the restaurant — which was a participant in Queen’s Feast: Charlotte Restaurant Week back in January — quietly closed for good. A CharlotteFive team member found the space empty on Thursday, March 21, with a sign on the door confirming the restaurant is permanently closed.
It’s still unclear when Phillip’s Bistro & Wine Bar closed and why. Keep an eye on this space as we work to get more details.
