After almost a year and a half in business, Weathered Souls’ Charlotte brewery will be permanently closing its doors this weekend.

“It is with a heavy heart, we announce the closure of our Charlotte brewery. .Join us this Saturday, April 6th, from 12-7pm for our final hurrah. Stock up on beer, bring your growlers, and come help kick our kegs,” the brewery posted on its social media accounts.

The message continued, “A heartfelt thank you to @blackmenrun_clt, @brandingblock, @qcitymetro, and all who stood by us from the beginning. This is our last call in Charlotte. Here’s to the next chapter! We’ll always love you Charlotte. & If you’re ever in SA, please drop by.”

The team at Weathered Souls has ties to the Charlotte brewing community. Zach Holt of Resident Culture in Charlotte learned the trade from his father, Mike Holt, who opened Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio in 2016. Holt spent time with head brewer and co-founder Marcus Baskerville, who created the Black Is Beautiful initiative.

Saturday will be the only day this week the brewery is open.

The San Antonio, Texas-based brewery opened its Lower South End space in November 2022, becoming the city’s first Black-owned brewery in Charlotte since Three Spirits closed in 2019. Since then, Another Brewery and Hippin Hops have also opened.

Weathered Souls is widely known for partnering with breweries nationwide, including over a dozen in Charlotte, for its “Black Is Beautiful” campaign to support racial justice causes. The efforts have been led by co-owner and head brewer Marcus Baskerville.

But just a few days after celebrating its anniversary in the Queen City, Weathered Souls was put up for sale.

Co-owner Mike Holt told CharlotteFive on Tuesday that the brewery was unable to find a buyer.

“In a nutshell, I think we just ran out of time,” Holt said. “We didn’t have the capital to continue onto better times, which we know are coming with neighborhood development right around the corner.“

He added, “We feel like we let the city down. There were a lot of people pulling for us ... that’s the toughest thing to deal with.”

The brewery closure comes amid a string of others in the Charlotte area. In March, Blue Blaze Brewing shut down after losing its space to redevelopment, and The Dreamchaser’s Brewery in Waxhaw lost its lease to Middle James Brewing Company. Catawba Brewing Co., D9 Brewing Co. and Dust Off Brewing Co. closed last year.
