‘It’s time’: Another local business is closing its doors at Camp North End
After a string of ongoing closings and openings, another Charlotte business is saying goodbye to its space at Camp North End.
Months after a viral post about struggling small businesses at the space, the team behind Wentworth & Fenn announced it will close its bakery after the holiday season.
“It hurts my heart to announce the closure of our storefront at Camp North End,” the bakery’s announcement says on Instagram. “My team and I have given it our all, but unfortunately, between rising costs, inconsistent foot traffic and certain things out of our control, we can no longer stay open in this location.”
End of an era
Wentworth & Fenn, an all-scratch bakery known for its custom cakes, pastries and artisan breads, opened at Camp North End in 2020. Before then, owner and executive pastry chef Samantha Ward had been serving up her specialty pastries at pop-ups and out of a camper before making the move to “the right spot where Wentworth & Fenn felt like home.”
“The energy and experience at Camp North End is very important to us. We want to put our stamp on flavor, experience and quality,” she previously told CharlotteFive. “For our brand, Camp North End is the place to execute it. There’s a ton of room for growth and building relationships with customers. It just fits.”
A few years later — even after closing its Latta Arcade location in February to put more resources into supporting its Camp North End storefront — the team says it’s time.
“We’re really gonna miss this space … So much has happened over the years. It’s difficult and absolutely bittersweet,” Wentworth & Fenn’s announcement states. “Thank you to those who have shown support and will continue to after we leave Camp North End.”
‘This isn’t goodbye forever’
An official closing date for Wentworth & Fenn has yet to be announced, but it will be around January.
Until then, the team said normal business operations will remain in place. Though this may be the end of an era for the bakery at Camp North End, “what’s next for W&F will be announced at a later date.”
“We love the community and want everyone to continue to support small businesses all across Charlotte,” Ward commented on CharlotteFive’s post about the bakery closure. “There are no hard feelings to anyone or anything. This is just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.”
