A new Mediterranean restaurant, Mazi — focused on mezze and small plates — is set to open March 13 in South End.

The newest Charlotte restaurant comes from Built On Hospitality, which has developed Mazi’s menu and will manage the operations of the restaurant owned by Troy Brewer and Hemant Patel. Mazi means “together” in Greek, so the team is building a menu and space to celebrate the “shared experience of dining out.”

Executive chef Chris Coleman and chef Whit Thomas crafted a menu of Mediterranean flavors to pair with cocktails by beverage director Bob Peters and a Mediterranean-focused wine list curated by wine steward Rob Oldenburg.

Spreads including whipped feta with roasted olives and chilled oysters with preserved lemon mignonette can get your meal started. Local ingredients are incorporated, too, with Carolina Gold rice falafel, paired with caramelized sweet onion dip and green zhug; and NC clams with lamb merguez, chickpea and date stew, and sharmoula.

Mazi’s small plates offerings include Carolina Gold Falafel, Grilled Little Gem Lettuce, Tuna Kofta and Lion’s Mane Mushroom Skewers.

“We will explore the entire Mediterranean culinary region, more than just the Greek, Israeli, and Lebanese food that most Americans think of, but also Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Spain, and Italy,” Coleman said in a news release.

“The Mediterranean Ocean touches such a wide variety of places and people, providing an array of cultures and cuisine for us to learn from and bring to Charlotte. On top of that, the food is fresh, healthy, and has some similarities in ingredients and technique to the American South that we look forward to expanding upon,” Coleman said.

The 55-seat restaurant — located in the same building that held Lincoln’s Haberdashery — will have 17 spots at the bar and room for about 30 guests outside.

Partners on the design and buildout of Mazi include architect Cluck Design, interior designer Ella Grant Designs, millwork and countertops from Universal Stone and general contractor Brewer Custom Homes.
