Brooks’ Sandwich House in NoDa has been named one of the “Best Classic Restaurants” in the nation by Food and Wine Magazine. The magazine applauds Brooks’ for its role as a “Charlotte staple for chili, burgers and livermush sandwiches” since the 1970s.

Brooks’ opened its doors in 1973 at 2710 N. Brevard St., when NoDa was still North Charlotte, a neighborhood filled with textile mills and the people who worked in them. Almost 50 years later, the Brooks family is still serving up chili, burgers and fries. Over time, Brooks’ has become an important part of Charlotte’s community, serving as a place where people from all walks of life come together to appreciate good food.

The award comes at a time of heightened attention on the restaurant. It has been temporarily closed since Dec. 9, when co-owner Scott Brooks was shot and killed in an attempted robbery while trying to open the restaurant for breakfast at 4:45 a.m. The police and FBI are offering a $21,000 reward to anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest.

Brooks’ will reopen on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. Following the re-opening, the shop will be open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and will no longer serve breakfast.
