Studio Movie Grill closes its Epicentre location — just after opening one in University
Studio Movie Grill, rated consistently as one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S., opened its second Charlotte location in December — but then closed its original Charlotte location on Monday, March 2.
The movie theater spent seven years at its home on the second level of the Epicentre. When it first opened, ordering food to your seats was considered new and inventive, a refreshing break from the typical popcorn and candy.
“SMG Epicentre opened seven years ago and is a very special and unique location, so it is with sincere and great sadness that we closed our doors today,” Lynne McQuaker, senior director of PR and outreach for Studio Movie Grill, told CharlotteFive.
“With multiple levels and five screens, which is less than our typical location, and despite a tremendous team, we faced an unusual amount of operational challenges,” McQuaker said. “Our team members are our most important stakeholders and they will be encouraged to apply for positions at our brand new SMG Prosperity Village location in the Charlotte area.”
Studio Movie Grill started in 1998. The company announced an expansion in June after receiving a $100M capital investment in April. This expansion is adding 50 new screens to an existing 333 screens in 10 states, including the new Charlotte spot that opened at 5336 Docia Crossing Road off Prosperity Church Road in Prosperity Village. The second location has 10 screens and 1,022 luxury recliners.
