Those coffee shop vibes, the ones that can only come from locally owned shops nestled in the hearts of our community, are just part of the things we’ve all been missing during the stay-at-home order to protect against community spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

So when good coffee news comes our way, it’s an extra chance to jump out of our kitchen chairs at home (or maybe it just means we’ve had too much caffeine ...).

Either way, here’s a dose of the good stuff: Queen City Grounds is opening the doors to its second location on or around May 23.

The coffee shop will be at the corner where South End meets uptown at Morehead and South Tryon streets. It will be located on the ground floor of Broadstone Queen City apartments.

Queen City Grounds has an accordian-style window at its new location that will be ideal for selling takeout coffee while keeping people safe from community spread of COVID-19. The coffee shop has a target opening date of May 23.

The location will be open for takeout for now to keep everyone safe and healthy. It’s an ideal setup for pickup, too: There’s a large accordian-style window, perfect for handing coffee out of, that opens onto South Tryon Street.

This news offers coffee fans at home a little something to look forward to. “It may be that date slips a little, but we’re pretty confident that we’ll be slinging drinks from that window location on the 23rd,” co-owner Adam Hummell told CharlotteFive.

In quarantine-related coffee news, the shop’s Fourth Ward location will reopen for curbside pickup on May 9.

Coffee delivery

If But I can’t wait that long for good coffee? was your first thought, you don’t have to. The Fourth Ward coffee shop is delivering not only its in-house Nightflyer Roastworks coffee beans, but coffee equipment, too.

Next time you place an order for a 12-ounce Night Owl Blend, throw in a Hario V60 Pour Over Kit, Chemex Coffeemaker or a scale for your perfect cuppa. “We have everything from filters to pour over kits to French press kits, scales and even skills for weighing your coffee,” co-owner Adam Hummell told CharlotteFive.

Why do you need all that stuff, though? “With the closing of many great local coffee bars, folks are forced now more than ever to bear the burden of making coffee at home, but this doesn’t have to be a daunting task,” Hummell said.

“Rather, brewing your own cup of coffee can be an enjoyable art and new hobby in a time when ... we have time.”

Touché.

“Set aside your janky Mr. Coffee and grandmother’s blade grinder for a quality burr grinder and manual brewing apparatus such as a Chemex or Hario V60. Add some fresh, small batch roasted beans into the mix and you’re now brewing like a pro,” Hummell said.

If you’re keeping score, Queen City Grounds is still planning its eventual third spot at The Refinery in Wesley Heights. Stay tuned for details on that location.
