There won’t be a Thanksgiving giveaway at Skyland Family Restaurant. Here’s why.

For the first time in 16 years, Skyland Family Restaurant won’t be open on Thanksgiving Day to feed hungry fans lining up outside.

Owner Jimmy Kakavitsas said the impact of COVID-19 and the food and labor shortages that have followed are behind the decision to shut down for the holiday.

“With help and food shortages, we decided to close this year,” he told CharlotteFive.

The restaurant was once open 24 hours a day, but since it reopened from the coronavirus shutdown, it’s now open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“Next year, I hope things will be better and we’ll go back to normal,” Kakavitsas said.

In the past, Skyland has given away as many as 3,000 meals to anyone who lined up at the door on Thanksgiving. The dinners include a turkey and all the trimmings, plus tea.
