The new Lulu’s Maryland Style Chicken & Seafood location in Plaza Midwood is now open

Lulu’s Maryland Style Chicken & Seafood is celebrating its grand opening in Plaza Midwood today, ending Charlotte’s long wait for more of the restaurant’s wildly popular crab cakes, wings and chicken and waffles.

What you should know: Restaurateurs Jay and Miketa Davis opened the first Lulu’s on Tuckaseegee Road in West Charlotte just before COVID-19 hit. The couple have been working on the new Central Avenue location for awhile, but — like many other restaurants — they had been fighting pandemic-related delays.

In the meantime, Jay Davis also opened HideAway, a bar and lounge on Tuckaseegee Road that hosts a Baltimore Ravens fan club and events like Mingle Mondays and Working Women Wednesdays.

What to expect: The new Lulu’s restaurant has a clean, modern vibe and features garage-style doors to open up the space for an indoor-outdoor feel. It’s about twice the size of the original spot.

“There’s so much culture, I feel like, on Central Avenue that this is one of the best places to be to add our own flair, our own flavor and to just give people what they love,” Miketa told CharlotteFive.

What you should try: Naturally, the Maryland-style crab cakes are a priority.

“Honestly, you can’t talk Maryland-style seafood and not have the crab cake,” Jay said.

Both Jay and Miketa are from Maryland, so it’s a staple food they grew up with, and they’re making it the only way they know how. “Jumbo lump crab meat, not a whole lot of filler, no onions, no peppers — you just get straight to the good stuff, Miketa said.
