Let’s talk about hot dogs. Eating a hot dog at a backyard cookout is one indication that it’s summer in America.

At its core, a hot dog is simple — a bun, a hot dog (beef, pork, chicken, turkey or veggie) and toppings. The sheer number of combinations is where this comfort food gets complicated. Then, there are distinctive hot dog styles depending on where you’re located.

Here are a few hot dog styles you’ll find in Charlotte.

  • Carolina-style hot dogs — chili, slaw, onions and yellow mustard.

  • Chicago-style hot dogs — fresh tomato, a pickle spear, hot peppers, onion, relish and yellow mustard (no ketchup).

  • New York-style hot dogs — sauerkraut, onion sauce and spicy brown mustard.
