You can get weekend brunch by the water at Drift on Lake Wylie

Best Eats in the 'Burbs

As suburban living has grown in popularity and appeal, the quality and selection of small-town restaurants has risen — and Charlotte is proof that sometimes the best meals are worth the drive.

Drift on Lake Wylie, the contemporary, chef-inspired chophouse at McLean Marina in Belmont, now serves Saturday and Sunday brunch.

Ken Aponte, who joined drift last month as executive chef, is leading the team who will whip up some crab cakes, French toast or fried chicken and funnel cakes while you sip on a mai tai or a piña “no” lada (no alcohol).

The restaurant is accessible by boat, or car of course. Bonus points if you can nab a seat on one of the restaurant’s patios overlooking the water.

Brunch begins is served from 10:30-2:30 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Here are some menu items to check out:

  • LUMP CRAB CAKES: Aleppo pepper beurre blanc, squid ink tuile, chili oil
  • BEEF TARTARE: Waffle chips, whole grain mustard aioli, spring radish, grape tomato confit, caperberries, salt & pepper cured egg yolk

  • BURGER: Tempura jalapeño, white cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, garlic aioli (served with your choice of fries or side salad)

  • FRIED CHICKEN & FUNNEL CAKES: House-made funnel cake, fried chicken breast, spicy maple syrup, powdered sugar
