Do you know what plombir is? You will when Yuliya’s Ice Cream opens in Charlotte.
Made-from-scratch ice cream, crafted with locally sourced ingredients, is on its way to the Metropolitan shopping center early next year.
Yuliya’s Ice Cream, owned by Belarusian immigrant Yuliya Shvinhelskaya and Taylor Richardson, will offer both dairy and vegan options. The ice cream will be churned in small batches without synthetic flavorings, dyes, emulsifiers or preservatives. The waffle cones will be gluten-free.
Options will include:
- Peanut Butter Bars
- Butter Almond Crunch
- Strawberry Cheesecake
- Slavic-inspired flavors that nod to Shvinhelskaya’s roots, such as plombir (a rich, Russian ice cream popular in former Soviet countries), sour cream honey cake and halva (a confectionery often made with ground seeds or nuts).
You’re going to want to check out the plombir, in particular.
“I had some friends here in Charlotte — American people — and I was surprised, they said it was their favorite flavor. It’s just a different kind of vanilla. I use a different technique than the other ice creams,” Shvinhelskaya told CharlotteFive.
If this all sounds familiar to those of you in the Lake Norman area, you’re not wrong. The couple got their start in the dessert business with a successful ice cream and cookies truck, Cookies with an Accent, in Huntersville.
The commercial kitchen that Shvinhelskaya and Richardson were renting closed during COVID-19, and they couldn’t find another that fit their needs, she explained via Instagram. Soon afterward, a search for a storefront location began.
“I’m super excited to be joining the Charlotte community and can’t wait to share this next chapter of ice cream with you,” Shvinhelskaya said in another Instagram post.
