Xiao Bao is closing at Optimist Hall, and a New York-style deli will take its place
A New York-style deli will be opening in 2023 at Optimist Hall, taking over the space where Xiao Bao now operates. The Asian food stall will close on Saturday, Dec. 31.
Chef Larry Schreiber plans to bring a taste of his upbringing to Charlotte. He describes Schreiber’s on Rye as a nostalgic New York-style deli with “Jew-ish” influences that will be the first of its kind in the area.
Schreiber’s on Rye will offer classic deli sandwiches such as pastrami on rye, hot dogs, sides including potato salad and Coney Island Knish. Jewish-inspired cookies and matzo ball soup are in the plans, too.
The concept will be Schreiber’s second food stall at the food hall in Optimist Park — he’s also an owner at Bao + Broth.
Xiao Bao closing
Xiao Bao, located between Boxcar Betty’s and Collier Candy Company at Optimist Hall, sells Asian food including okonomiyaki and boba tea.
“We are grateful for nearly two years of support from Optimist Hall and the entire Charlotte community at our first expansion of the Xiao Bao concept,” chef and owner Joshua Walker said.
“We look forward to focusing our efforts on the continued success of Xiao Bao at our original location in Charleston, SC, and our newest location in Nashville, TN,” he added.
