You can sip a customizable coffee or a beer from the tap at Overflow in Lake Norman

It’s all about the beverages at Overflow, Lake Norman’s first self-pour establishment. During the daytime, you can order up a custom coffee, then take a seat to get some work done. On evenings and weekends, you can relax while you browse dozens of drink choices, including craft beer, seltzer or kombucha.

If you’re finding the choices overwhelming, there’s help. All of the staff members are cicerones, which is comparable to being a sommelier — only for beer instead of wine. (And guess what? There’s wine available on tap, too.)

Julee Herberth is the managing partner, taking care of all the day-to-day operations of the business that opened last fall for setting up with your laptop or gathering with friends to sip drinks and hear live music to cap off your week.

“Between the beverages and the music, everyone just seems to be extremely happy thus far with us being unique,” she said.

The drinks: There are 70 self-pour taps available, offering a variety of beers, ciders, seltzers, sours and kombuchas, along with that wine we mentioned. About a fourth of those offerings are core staples, while others rotate.

Overflow also started off 2023 with a new coffee program. A special coffee maker imported from Denmark grinds the beans freshly when you order. The spout also serves hot water for tea, espresso shots and more — all ordered from an iPad near the system or an app on your phone.

“It’s pretty cool. Everyone seems to enjoy it,” Herberth said.

It’s the based on the Italian way to drink coffee, so you’ll see little espresso cups and petite macchiatos, she said. “Starbucks makes it big and frou-frou, but we don’t.”

On the weekends, you can order a bloody Mary from a staff member, then visit the condiment bar to spice it up how you like and add garnishes.

The food: There’s no kitchen at Overflow. However, you can purchase prepackaged snacks or two-person charcuterie board. Food trucks are on site Thursday through Sunday, and guests can also bring in any food of their own, whether it be a lunch from home during the day or a pizza for dinner at night.

The space: The main-floor space includes couches and other lounge areas along with the tables and chairs. You’ll find USB ports and other outlets to charge devices.

The ground-floor patio features tables sheltered with umbrellas plus fire pits to warm the space. Garage doors open along the building for an indoor-outdoor feel when the weather allows.

Upstairs, there’s a 21+ adult only rooftop lounge with a similar setup, plus different taps than what are on the bottom floor. You can grab one of the blankets available for additional warmth in the cooler months. Fans and misters are likely on the way for summer.

The vibe: There’s entertainment, too. You’ll find karaoke nights and a kids day each month, plus live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and occasionally on Thursdays.

“We want to make sure that everyone is comfortable and can come to enjoy the space,” Herberth said.

Overflow’s owners are Herberth and her husband, Eric; Mark and Stephanie Fox; and David and Stacy Jarrett.

“We appreciate all the support — businesses and people — that have come to visit us,” Herberth said.
