Food and Drink

Would you eat food created by AI? In the Charlotte area, now you can.

Would you eat a meal whipped up in the kitchen by AI? What about just dessert, maybe — a custard or a milkshake?

In Charlotte and around the rest of the country, now you can — thanks to Shake Shack’s new plant-based custard and milkshake.

Using a company called NotCo with an Artificial Intelligence algorithm, Shake Shack released the nondairy custard and milkshake on Tuesday at all 260 of Shake Shack’s locations — including Charlotte and Huntersville.

The company isn’t 3D printing custard bowls over there or anything like that. Rather, the AI (named Giuseppe) has worked to come up with plant-based ingredient combinations that closely replicate the animal-based versions.

Here’s what you’re actually eating:

  • NOTMILK: Water, sunflower oil, pea protein, contains less than 2% of: sugar, pineapple juice concentrate, dipotassium phosphate, calcium carbonate, gellan gum, acacia gum, salt, monocalcium phosphate, natural flavor, cabbage juice concentrate, Vitamin D2, Vitamin B12.

So, what do you think, fam? Would you try Giuseppe’s recipes, whipped up in his “kitchen,” even if he’s not a human chef? Send us an email at charlottefive@charlottefive.com or answer in our poll below:

Shake Shack will also launch a new vegetarian burger on Friday, May 5. Called the Veggie Shack, it has mushroom, sweet potatoes, carrots, farro, and quinoa. It’s topped with American cheese, crispy onions, pickles and ShackSauce.

Editor’s note: The custard and milkshake ingredients were created by AI, but the vegetarian burgers were created by human chefs. A previous version of this story was incorrect.
