Matthews and the surrounding area in South Mecklenburg County have seen their share of favorite restaurant closings since the pandemic started, and long before.

Which restaurant meals do you still crave?

In December, The Pizza Peel & Tap Room at Matthews Station closed after opening in 2018. It’s been replaced by The Flying Biscuit Cafe, another concept by the same restaurant group.

In April 2022, Pizza Spiga in Mint Hill closed after serving pizza and Italian meals for 24 years at Matthews-Mint Hill Road.

In January 2022, Beantown Tavern, known for its traditional Boston food and home for Red Sox fans, permanently closed. Back in 2018, an online petition circulated to keep the bar in downtown Matthews.

In October 2020, Jimmie’s Restaurant, known for classic American fare, closed after more than 60 years. The Charlotte restaurant moved to 7024 Brighton Park Drive in Mint Hill for the last 16 years.
