Little Big Burger, known for its thick but tiny Angus steak burgers at Prosperity Village Square in north Charlotte, has abruptly closed following financial issues and an eviction.

Little Big Burger owed an unspecified amount of money to its landlord, according to Mecklenburg District Court filings. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office had posted an eviction notice on the restaurant’s door last week, the agency confirmed Tuesday to The Charlotte Observer.

Founded in 2010 in Oregon, the burger chain made its North Carolina debut in 2017 at the 2,400-square-foot Charlotte shopping center space on Benfield Road. It sat across from a Publix supermarket and just off the Benfield Road exit of Interstate 485.

The Little Big Burger chain was bought by Charlotte-based Chanticleer Holdings in 2015. In 2020, Amergent Hospitality Group was formed as a subsidiary of Chanticleer. Amergent, which operates the restaurants including another store in Charlotte, did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Amergent has experienced financial difficulties in the past year.

Last December, Amergent said it had a deficit of $16.3 million and was seeking alternative funding, according to an SEC filing by the company. It said it planned to monitor conditions over the next 12 months.

No one answered Little Big Burger’s phone Tuesday at the Highland Creek area store, but a voice message still provided daily hours. As of Tuesday, Prosperity Village Square listed Little Big Burger on its website and showed the center is fully leased.

Shopping center owner LA-based Westfield Financial did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

About Little Big Burger and Amergent

Little Big Burger’s menu includes burgers, truffle fries and floats.

It has another restaurant at Rea Farms on Sandy Rock Place. Online orders for the Prosperity site on Tuesday are directed to the south Charlotte store.

Last year, a Little Big Burger ghost kitchen opened in Steele Creek for delivery only at American Burger Co., also owned by Amergent. However, all American Burger Co. stores in North Carolina and New York closed on Dec. 31, according to an Amergent SEC filings.

Amergent has four other brands — Burgers Grilled Right, Bourdreaux’s Cajun Kitchen, Jaybee’s Chicken Palace and Pizza Rev — with 40 locations. None are in North Carolina.
