Ready to sample some of York County’s best food? Here’s how to eat for cheaper

Got $55 and a hankering for some of the best food in York County? Now’s the time to book a reservation.

YoCo Taste Trail Week is back. The event runs Aug. 24-31 with 17 restaurants signed on, and more deals could add on.

A handful of first-timers include Elk Ave Tavern, Rock Taco and Burgers & Barley in Rock Hill. Other options include Whitaker’s in Fort Mill and Sweet Caroline’s in McConnells.

Participating restaurants offer special menus with at least three courses for $55, or a discount promotion. It’s similar to and partly inspired by Queen’s Feast Charlotte Restaurant Week, plus Restaurant Week South Carolina. Those weeks happen in January, plus Queens Feast repeats each July. Some York County restaurants run deals in all of the restaurant week events.

York County began a Taste Trail before the COVID-19 pandemic began and operated like the popular YoCo Brew Trail, where patrons visit breweries throughout the county. Customers mark off visited sites and get a shirt or prize once they’ve completed so many brewery visits. Now, the Taste Trail has switched to the restaurant week format instead.

“York County continues to expand its culinary offerings year over year,” said Andy Clinton, president and CEO of organizing group Visit York County.

Menus are available by restaurant or on visityorkcounty.com. Reservations or calling ahead is recommended during Taste Trail Week.

Among the tastes available, diners can try a seasonal charcuterie board with rainbow trout and caramel apple cake from Clover Harvest in Clover. Or maybe the salmon carpaccio, blossom rolls and yuzu cheesecake at Whitaker’s in Fort Mill.

Menu items across the event vary and include burgers, craft tacos and sirloin steak, meatballs, short ribs, crab cakes, snapper, oysters, scallops and shrimp risotto. There’s also champagne, fondue and grilled pound cake with a doughnut stack on participating menus.
