Movie-themed Charlotte restaurant closes after nearly 15 years for a taco spot to take over
Charlotte’s food scene is losing a beloved longtime local restaurant.
Nearly 15 years after opening, Lebowki’s Neighborhood Grill has permanently closed with plans for a new restaurant to take over its space.
In an Instagram post shared Monday morning, the team announced the restaurant is closed effective immediately to make way for Ladybird Taco.
Texas-style tacos in Charlotte
Ladybird Tacos, which has locations in Alabama and Tennessee, is modeled after the taco scene in Austin, TX, serving up breakfast and lunch tacos crafted with house-made tortillas, queso, salsa and salads from fresh ingredients. The new Charlotte taco spot — its first in North Carolina — will also have full barista service, plus craft coffee.
“We are incredibly honored to step into a space that has meant so much to this community,” Brooks Veazey, CEO of Ladybird Taco, said in a statement. “Lebowski’s was a place where friends and neighbors could come together over great food and drinks, and we are excited to carry on that tradition in our own way.”
‘A Dilworth tradition’
Lebowski’s, notably themed after the movie ”The Big Lebowski,” opened its doors in 2009, serving classic bar bites along with Buffalo, NY-inspired dishes like a beef on ‘weck sandwich, haddock fish and chips, and of course, Buffalo wings.
Between recent renovations under new ownership in 2022 and new upgrades during a temporary closure in 2023, the local eatery has seen a lot of changes lately — but it still remained a staple.
It’s unclear why the restaurant closed or if there are plans for the Lebowski’s team to find a new home for its restaurant. A message sent to CharlotteFive via Instagram said, “We are not doing interviews. I’m sorry.”
