Our wait is over: We have an opening date for the first Whataburger near Charlotte
For years, we’ve all been chasing details about Whataburger bringing its Texas-born and nationally-loved burgers to North Carolina. And the opening date for the first restaurant has finally arrived.
Now, the taste you’ve been waiting for is here. Whataburger’s new Gastonia location will open its doors at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 29.
In the meantime, you can peruse the menu and decide what you’ll order first.
What to eat at Whataburger
If you want to start with breakfast, a few top choices include:
- bacon, sausage, potato or chorizo taquitos
- Breakfast on a Bun, with sausage or bacon, plus egg and cheese
- pancake platter with sausage or bacon
Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit
Each comes with hash brown sticks and a coffee or milk, unless you want to upgrade to an orange juice.
But, keep in mind this is Whataburger — a 24-hour restaurant where you can get a burger at any time. So, if you’re up for digging right in, consider a few popular bites:
- No. 1 Whataburger, dressed with mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and diced onions
Spicy Chicken Sandwich, with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayonnaise on a brioche bun
Whataburger Patty Melt, with two beef patties, grilled onions and two slices of Monterey Jack cheese, topped with Creamy Pepper Sauce
Sweet & Spicy Bacon Burger, with two beef patties, bacon, grilled onions, two cheeses and mustard, topped with Sweet & Spicy Pepper Sauce
Each comes with a medium french fry or apple slices, and a 32-ounce drink.
Your meals there are also fully customizable, as Whataburger’s “Just Like You Like It” motto proclaims. Cheese is an add-on, as are jalapenos, avocado and bacon. There’s a list of sauces you can swap in, too, including ranch or jalapeno ranch, honey mustard, honey butter sauce and several others.
Whataburger’s expansion
Whataburger is celebrating its 75th anniversary touting the company’s expansion from a small burger stand that Harmon Dobson opened in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas, to a nationwide chain of more than 1,100 restaurants. Its movement into North Carolina makes state No. 17 for the brand.
“For 75 years, Whataburger has grown from a single burger stand into a brand folks love across the country — but our heart has always stayed right where it belongs: in local communities just like Gastonia,” Debbie Stroud, Whataburger president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.
“As someone who lived for years in North Carolina, finally opening our doors here feels like coming home. We’re excited to start making memories together — first bites, first jobs, first dates — and to deliver the Whataburger experience that keeps fans coming back: hot, fresh, and made Just Like You Like It.”
