Buona Vita, located in the Ballantyne area of South Charlotte, blends pub energy with an Italian twist, serving up pizza in a setting that feels more like a neighborhood sports bar than an Italian kitchen.

At first glance, it’s the kind of place you’d stop in for a cold beer and a game, not necessarily expecting a pizza worth writing about.

But tucked into the menu alongside wings, burgers and bar snacks is a full lineup of Italian options, including pastas, subs and pizza. And while the restaurant open since 2009 may not be a dedicated pizzeria, the kitchen is clearly putting in some effort to elevate the food above your standard bar fare.

We stopped in on a Friday afternoon and found the place lively but low-key. There’s a casual crowd, lots of TVs on the walls and a handful of families mixed in with locals stopping by for a beer.

The crust is thick and golden. The edge of a red and white checkered paper liner is visible. The pizza box rests on a dark outdoor table, with shakers for red pepper flakes and grated cheese, along with a knife and fork, in the upper right corner.

Service was quick, the drinks were cold, and our server had strong opinions on which pies to try, which we always take as a good sign.

We ordered the large cheese pizza, and it arrived looking solid, with a thick crust that’s a step up in size from your typical New York slice. It was cooked on a pizza screen, which gave the bottom a distinct bumpy texture and a firm bite. There wasn’t much flop, which we appreciated, and the structure held up well from first bite to last.

Flavor-wise, it leaned a little flat. The cheese and sauce were balanced, but neither brought much punch. It’s the kind of pizza that almost asks for garlic powder, chili flakes or some grated parm to wake it up.

That said, it was satisfying in that comforting, game-day-food kind of way.

Would we make a cross-town drive just for this pizza? Probably not. But if you’re nearby, want to watch a game or just need a place that can please a crowd with varied tastes, Buona Vita fits the bill. The menu is broad enough to satisfy most cravings, and the atmosphere is friendly and familiar.

It’s not trying to be a trendy pizza destination, and that’s OK. Sometimes you just want a booth, a beer, and a hot pie that shows up fast. Buona Vita delivers exactly that.
