Charlotte pizzeria to close doors on last remaining location. ‘We are grateful’

A beloved pizza place is closing its doors after more than 17 years.

The Pizza Peel + Tap Room is bidding adieu to Charlotte’s Cotswold community and will close after service Sunday, Nov. 16, the restaurant said via Instagram.

It’s the pizzeria’s only remaining location in the city.

“We have made empowering community connections, watched kids grow (hired some of these same kids) and made lasting relationships that will live on,” the restaurant wrote. “I want to personally thank everyone that has had a “Feel for the Peel” for their support over the years.”

“We are grateful for the opportunity to have served this community.”

A reason for the closure wasn’t made public.

CharlotteFive reached out to The Pizza Peel for more information Monday, Nov. 10, and was awaiting a response.

Founded in 2008, The Pizza Peel served an assortment of specialty pizzas from pepperoni to BBQ Chicken and The Kimbo Slice — topped with mozzarella cheese, chicken, bacon, Granny Smith apples, caramelized onions, ricotta cheese, honey basil swirl and fresh basil.

The menu also included pastas, sandwiches, salads and other light bites, according to its website.

The pizzeria is part of the Stomp, Chomp and Roll hospitality group and closed its Plaza Midwood location last year to make way for its sister concept: The Improper Pig, CharlotteFive previously reported. The barbecue joint is slated to open at 1600 Central Avenue in December.

The Matthews location of The Pizza Peel also closed in 2022 and was replaced by The Flying Biscuit Cafe, which is also owned by the hospitality group.

“The flip will help offer a better quality of life for our teammates and put more money into their pockets,” Owner Will Bigham told CharlotteFive at the time.

Local love for The Pizza Peel

News of the restaurant’s closure prompted a flood of reactions from locals who had come to love the pizza joint over the years:

  • “The best buffalo chicken pizza in all of Charlotte!! I’m so sad,” Ashlee Durrance wrote.
  • “Will visit once more this week for some wings and beer, and maybe even a Sunnyside Up Pizza! Will miss this place for sure,” Shelley Burton-Manning commented.
  • “Worked at the plaza midwood location for over two years….had so much fun and made friends for life there. Good luck @thepeelman!!!” Katie Hannigan wrote.
  • Oh no. My guilty pleasure El Blanco. Nothing compares,” Katherne Kiger said.
