Budget bites: On Sundays in March, you can get free chicken at Whataburger

People everywhere are feeling the pinch of high food prices, and Whataburger is stepping in to provide a bit of relief with a free, limited-time offer in North Carolina.

Every Sunday in March, Whataburger customers can stop in at any North Carolina location from noon to 3 p.m. to get a free, three-piece order of Whatachick’n Strips. The meal usually costs $5.69.

The Texas-sized chicken tenders come with gravy, but you can swap that out for the sauce of your choice. Selections include the restaurant’s Honey BBQ, Honey Butter or Honey Mustard, Buffalo Sauce, Jalapeno Ranch or Ranch.

“Our chicken is really good. It’s kind of crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. And we just thought, you know, what a great way to introduce [Whataburger] to a chicken-loving state,” vice president of marketing and communications Donna Tuttle told CharlotteFive. “They’re a little bigger than you see at other competitors.”

The one-per-person promotion is also available at Whataburger locations in South Carolina and Georgia. You can get the deal via Whataburger’s app or in person at the restaurants.

The Texas-based burger chain also recently launched a new Whatadeal value menu featuring customer favorites for as little as $3.

  • $3 Big Ranch Wrap: A Whatachick’n Strip, lettuce and tomato with ranch and American cheese in a warm tortilla
  • $4 Whatachick’n Bites: A five-piece order of chicken nuggets
  • $5 Bacon and Cheese Whataburger Jr.: A customizable beef burger topped with bacon and cheese

The value menu items can be turned into a meal with small fries and a small drink for $2.49 more.

“We realize that consumers are feeling pressure from all sides — inflationary pressures — and we want to make sure we have an offering that says we hear you, we understand times are tough and we have products that are available at a really good price point. And they’re really good,” senior vice president and chief marketing officer Scott Hudler told CharlotteFive.
