Swanky Japanese restaurant closing in SouthPark after 13 years

Baku, a swanky Japanese restaurant and bar, is biding adieu to Charlotte.

After 13 years in SouthPark, the restaurant will close in April “as the property is returned to the landlord for future redevelopment,” owner Birdie Yang wrote in a farewell message shared on Baku’s Instagram page.

An elaborate sashimi arrangement is presented in a large bowl filled with crushed ice and garnished with red berries and lime slices. The platter features a variety of fresh seafood, including tuna roses, sliced octopus, salmon, and mackerel.

“So many memories were made here — from incredible events to unforgettable meals,” he added. “To everyone who has dined with us over the years, we are truly grateful.”

“Come visit us one last time and help us celebrate everything we’ve built together.”

In February, Charlotte-based insurance firm Amwins filed a land development construction plan permit to build its new headquarters at Sharon Station, home to Baku and a few other vacant buildings, The Charlotte Observer reported.

The company hopes to erect “a single mixed-use tower” with office and retail space at the new hub. Existing buildings are set to be demolished.

There are currently no plans to reopen Baku elsewhere, Yang told CharlotteFive. The restaurateur, who’s also behind tasting menu restaurant Sora, is working to revamp his casual, Asian fusion concept Yama Asian Kitchen in the meantime. The restaurant will reopen as Yama SouthPark in May.

“We’re renovating, refreshing, and re-imagining everything — all to bring you an even better dining experience,” a message on Yama’s website reads. “We can’t wait to welcome you back this May — brighter, better and more inspired than ever.”
