Morning, noon, night: Spend a day eating your way around Charlotte’s Myers Park

Growing up in Charlotte, I always enjoyed driving through historic Myers Park, mostly when I was shuttling myself to and from Charlotte Youth Symphony rehearsals and concerts.

The unmistakably tall willow oak trees with wide, leafy canopies spanning the median-separated boulevards, the brick mansions with massive front lawns that scream old money Charlotte: This is quintessential Myers Park.

A quick pass through the neighborhood today and you’d think it’s frozen in time.

But a closer look reveals the modern new builds and teardowns deliberately rebuilt in old-world styles to embody the former aesthetic.

If the trees could talk like the ladies who lunch, they’d yap about everything they’ve seen and everywhere the people go, from Queens University students to longtime locals.

Yet Myers Park’s allure never fades, and it’s where I take out-of-towners when I want to show the city off a bit because of the neighborhood’s simple, natural beauty situated in the heart of the Queen City.

With a bit of re-discovery and intel from a few locals, here’s where to grab morning coffees, afternoon lunches, happy hours and fun dinners in one of the most idyllic neighborhoods in Charlotte.

This is Myers Park: Morning, noon, night.

Morning in Myers Park

Start your day by dispensing yourself a coffee and grabbing one of many two-egg breakfast sandwiches or bagels from Laurel Market.

If you’d prefer a casual place to sit down, then any assortment of breakfast sammies or omelettes from Reid’s Fine Foods fit the bill.

Or for an even quieter ambience, visit Higher Grounds Cafe, which is affiliated with Manolo’s Bakery and nestled peacefully in the Myers Park United Methodist Church, whose gothic architecture from 1929 transports you to the Duke or Oxford university campuses, if even for a minute.

Inside, settle in a booth as you can nibble on a mini empanada or croissant and sip on a cortado.

If time permits, sip your coffee as you stroll over the bridge and around the pond at nearby Freedom Park.

If time is not a factor at all, then linger on the rolling hills in front of the park’s amphitheater for fun people and dog watching.

Noon in Myers Park

As the clock hits high noon, slip into a wooden booth at Providence Road Sundries and dine on a double hamburger or a tangy firecracker blackened salmon wrap with fries and iced tea.

Take in the quiet, laid-back atmosphere among those who’ve just finished a round of golf, work in the area, and couples and mothers or nannies minding young children.

If you’d rather have something to-go, then head next door to Pasta & Provisions, open since 1992, for takeaway bread, prepared meals, or a few imported Italian pantry items.

If your hankering is for Chinese, then pop into bustling Taipei Express for a cheap and cheerful Sa Cha Chicken lunch combo. This one’s good because it’s neither too salty nor saucy, and they make a decent hot and sour soup, too.

A classic white takeout box for rice sits next to the bowl, with the casual, modern restaurant blurred in the background.

For a buzzier vibe, head to Salted Melon for any assortment of bowls, salads and wraps, popular among more health-conscious crowds and university students.

After lunch, if you’re in need of a pick-me-up coupled with a little retail therapy, then stop by Not Just Coffee, which shares space with SOCO Gallery and the men’s fine clothing boutique Tabor.

As you wait for your matcha latte you may wish to peruse Tabor’s wares, which include labels and home goods you’re more likely to see along Elizabeth Street in Manhattan’s Soho shopping district.

Night in Myers Park

“Cocktails at Sala and then walking over the courtyard to Stagioni is the hottest drink and dinner combo in the city right now,” says Ted Williams, editor-in-chief of Tiny Money.

Indeed, Sala is where the mature Myers Park crowd goes for after work hobnobbing, small bites and aperitifs. And if you’re lucky enough to have booked a romantic table at cozy sister restaurant Stagioni, then try the pizza or the many delish chewy pastas in the 100-year-old villa, where it’s held fort for more than a decade and is even rumored to be haunted.

From the perspective of a diner, a large wine wall features multiple tiers of wooden shelves. The shelves are packed with a vast and organized collection of wine bottles. Warm backlighting from the ceiling illuminates the top row. The corner of a white marble table is visible in the foreground.

If you’d prefer California-influenced small plates, then Napa on Providence offers shareable shrimp gnocchi, meatballs and customizable margherita flatbreads.

You can also head to Rada, which offers the closest thing to a New York City West Village restaurant experience if such a thing could be bottled and sold.

Dim lights, a chic elegant interior, a chatty and trendy crowd, a menu that’s sophisticated but not too pretentious, and a welcoming bar (plus a little je ne sais quoi) are to be expected.

If you’d prefer bold, Mediterranean flavors, then Yassou Greek, which anchors a boutique-lined petite strip mall, deserves a visit.

The braised lamb, feta watermelon salad, octopus and stuffed peppers are all favorites of food influencer and “Charlotte Foodie” Robin Tan.

Finally, if there’s a game on or cause for any celebration to wrap up the evening, then head over to Selwyn Avenue Pub, where the crowds and action always spill over into the patio over burgers and beers.

But if nabbing a delicious burger and fries combo is your only mission for the evening, then Ace No. 3 is the best bet in the neighborhood.
