Don’t drive past this ‘legendary’ Lake Norman farmers market, Southern Living says

A Lake Norman-area market was recognized by Southern Living as one of the South’s “legendary” farm stands worth pulling over for.

The magazine included Josh’s Farmers Market in Mooresville in a roundup of eight standout roadside produce destinations across the South.

“From fresh North Carolina seafood to locally grown fruits and veggies, if it’s in season, you can find it at Josh’s Market. Shoppers come from all over the Charlotte area to shop at this Lake Norman institution that started more than 30 years ago,” social media director Brennan Long told Southern Living.

“As Virginia natives, my parents love that they can even find their beloved Homestead Creamery milk and ice cream.”

Founded in 1990 after two young brothers began selling homegrown cantaloupes on the side of Williamson Road, according to its website, Josh’s Farmers Market has grown into a seven-day-a-week destination known for its fresh produce, local meats, seafood, baked goods and specialty grocery items.

The market also has become a seasonal staple in the Lake Norman area, particularly during the holidays, when it transforms into a Christmas market filled with trees, wreaths, garland and gift baskets for families shopping for holiday decorations and gifts.

Another NC market makes the list

Cashiers Farmers Market in Cashiers, about 170 miles west of uptown Charlotte, was also included in Southern Living’s roundup.

The market, which opened in 1995, began as a small produce tent behind a gas station before growing into a longtime community gathering spot in western North Carolina, according to Southern Living. It’s known for its seasonal produce, homemade pies, jams, cheeses and locally made goods, along with its adjacent barbecue takeout restaurant, On the Side.

Customers visiting the market are often greeted by the owners’ golden retrievers, adding to the spot’s warm, small-town feel.
