Rock Hill breakfast hotspot The Yolk is coming to Uptown — and we’re already craving the waffles and benedicts
Beloved Rock Hill breakfast hotspot The Yolk is making its way into Uptown. This isn’t the first big piece of news chef/owner Gregory Collier has dropped on the culinary scene this year — he announced just a month ago that he would start working as executive chef at Loft & Cellar Uptown, in addition to maintaining his Rock Hill eatery.
This next big shift is landing The Yolk (which Collier owns with his wife Subrina) at 7th Street Public Market (224 E. 7th St.) where Local Loaf can currently be found, with a hopeful opening month of December. The last restaurant the Colliers opened in Charlotte was @Dawn — the Ayrsley spot closed last year.
While I’ve only taken one adventure to Rock Hill that settled me into a seat at The Yolk, it was a mind-blowing breakfast experience. The local-food-focused cafe is easy-going, with an almost grungy hipster vibe (à la Common Market) that gives you every excuse to squeeze into a booth, scan the chalkboard of inspired daily specials and focus entirely on the vibrance of the food coming your way. That morning, I dug into a skillet of farm-fresh eggs and veggie hash with toast points.
As for the Uptown menu (which will be served daily from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.), look for daily specials and pre-existing popular menu items. “We will definitely come with our classics, mojo hash, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffle,” Chef Greg wrote in an email. “We are gonna add a few seasonal lunch items. And we are bringing back our veggie benedict from @Dawn.”
Based on the Rock Hill menu, here are 5 dishes to drool over until the Uptown location opens its doors:
There’s Fire
Chomp on brown-butter biscuits with smoked chicken gravy and jalapeno jam.
Challah Back
Yes to two slices of French toast with two eggs, plus bacon or sausage.
Sweet Potato Waffle
This gluten-free delight comes with pecan butter and maple whipped cream, plus the option to add house-made five-grain granola, chocolate chips or pecans.
Beach Bowl
This is a vegan grain bowl of the day, courtesy of the chef’s inspiration. I love the mystery of it.
Egg Benedict
This is where you get crazy/creative. Order two poached eggs on English muffins with your choice of side (mmm fresh fruit with mint honey) and your choice of bacon or Canadian bacon, sausage, avocado and tomato, turkey bacon or turkey sausage.
