From taking breaks to biggest vice: 7 things you might not know about the 2017 Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year

Theresa Drew, managing partner for the Carolina practice of Deloitte, was named Queens University of Charlotte’s 2017 Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year. Drew, 60, joined Deloitte after graduating from college 38 years ago and has served in a variety of roles in different locations, including managing partner of Deloitte’s San Diego practice and partner in charge of audit in Phoenix.

Here are 7 things you might not know about her:

(1) Her version of taking a break during the work day

Walking the halls.

“To take a break and stay connected with our people, I walk the halls and visit with my colleagues,” Drew said. “Their enthusiasm for client service and watching their personal career development over time energizes me.”

(2) One piece of advice she’d give her younger self, just starting in the workforce

“Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks,” Drew said.

(3) What keeps her feeling challenged every day

New clients, new markets and new opportunities.

“In addition to my client service roles, I’ve been on the forefront of our women’s initiative and worked to build Deloitte’s inclusive culture,” Drew said. “I’ve also led our community involvement efforts in all the cities where I’ve worked. New clients, new markets, and new opportunities have kept me challenged every day of my career.”

(4) Her biggest vice

“Jamocha Almond Fudge ice cream by Baskin Robbins,” she said.

(5) The support she sees as crucial to her success

Her 34-year marriage to her husband, Doug.

“I’ve been married to Doug for 34 years and we have one son, Alexander, who is a freshman in college,” Drew said. “Doug and I have been partners in every aspect of our lives, from raising our son and sharing household responsibilities to being supportive of each other’s careers and personal interests. I could not have been successful without his support.”

(6) The best habit she’s developed for her work flow

A ‘To-Do’ list.

“To this day, especially when I’m feeling overwhelmed, I make a ‘To Do’ list,” she said. “It helps me stay focused on my priorities and provides a sense of accomplishment when I get things done.”

(7) One thing she dreams of doing after her career with Deloitte

“After Deloitte, I would like to serve on a corporate board of directors,” she said. “I have a lot to contribute with my financial background and experience in corporate governance through my non-profit board service and participation in the National Association of Corporate Directors.”
