Time-travel to 1776? A new Charlotte immersive exhibit will make history come alive
Next year, Charlotteans will be stepping back in time 250 years with an exclusive exhibit that offers a window into the country’s origins. The Charlotte Museum of History will host ”American Revolution, the Augmented Exhibition”, in April 2026 — its only appearance in the Carolinas.
The immersive experience developed by Histovery, a company with offices in Paris, New York and Barcelona that develops interactive displays, will be on tour in select cities to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. From there, it will travel through 2031, with a goal of reaching all 50 states.
“This exhibit shares the story of the American Revolution in a new and interactive way that speaks to the hearts and minds of the diverse American people today,” Terri White, president and CEO of the Charlotte Museum of History, said in a news release.
“By bringing this national exhibit to Charlotte, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of our nation’s origins and the principles of freedom and liberty that continue to guide us.”
What to expect
Visitors can expect interactive 3D recreations of events that took place from 1763 to 1789. You’ll see the Boston Tea Party, the Constitutional Convention and the Battle of Yorktown via digital displays.
A look at historic Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Canada and France is also in the plans, as is learning about the “diverse figures who contributed to America’s founding.”
“American Revolution, the Augmented Exhibition,” was created in partnership with historians and scholars such as Pulitzer Prize-winning author and biographer Stacy Schiff and UNC Chapel Hill history professor Kathleen DuVal, among others.
A major gift from North Carolina’s John William Pope Foundation will fund a portion of the exhibit.
The museum is also seeking funds to support the national exhibit and a companion exhibit to highlight North Carolina’s contributions to the American Revolution.
