How ‘The Ultimatum’ works

The Ultimatum follows couples at a crossroads in their relationships. One partner is ready to get married while the other isn’t, leading the marriage-ready partner to issue an ultimatum: commit to marriage or move on.

During the social experiment, each person temporarily separates from their partner, dates other cast members and enters a trial marriage with a new match before reuniting with their original partner to decide whether to get engaged, stay together or break up.

In 2023, the series filmed its second season in Charlotte.

According to Netflix, Jessica is the one who issued the ultimatum.

“Jessica Grace is ready for her forever,” Netflix wrote in her cast biography. The streaming service describes her as someone who “was ready to get married yesterday.”

Jessica and Edris met after she approached him in a hotel lobby. He invited her to spend the Fourth of July together, and by August, the couple had signed a lease together, according to Netflix.

While both want children, Jessica believes marriage should come first. Netflix says she won’t compromise on selfishness in a relationship and is looking for a partner who is ready to “build a life as a team.”

For Edris, one of the biggest challenges in their relationship has been differing views on boundaries.

“I wasn’t sure Jessica and I shared the same values around boundaries, respect, and emotional safety in a relationship,” he said in his Netflix biography. He hopes participating in the show’s relationship experiment will provide clarity.

The new season of The Ultimatum premieres on Netflix on Aug. 27.
